What Are Your Aquatic Weed Control Options?

There is absolutely nothing people enjoy more than a bit of plant genocide, especially in their pond, or in some cases their fishpond wherein it’d make huge issues for both the fish, and for you. Fish do not enjoy navigating through a massive forest just like any other creature, therefore it is best to keep a handle on the plants on the bottom of the pond, before some of them develops into the man-eating plant from Jumanji.

An excess of watery plants can create problems all the way from boat motors getting clogged, to bad results while fishing, to kids experiencing a terrible time attempting to swim through the water. None of those are anything that you desire, so it is better to eradicate the source of this problem before it even begins if you can.

You have a few choices at your disposal, choices that go from biological control, which is to say the introduction of fish which simply govern the aquatic life population, to lining the entire pond with a plastic lining…that would be a rather drastic measure, but hey, do whatever suits you.

So let us review a few of the choices, and then you may decide the one that is suited for you, just remember that these are only a very small selection of choices, and you must speak with other pond owners, or professionals to learn about every single method available to you.

Harvesting – Getting rid of the plants through manual labor, is of course a good choice. However, if the plant is not situated on the shoreline, or isn’t|is not sitting on the surface of the pond, you may find yourself investing in some scuba equipment to swim down there without drowning. If you do not know the ins and outs of scuba diving, or just cannot hold your breath for an incredibly long time, it is encouraged for you to get a hold of the professionals. As a matter of fact, there are companies who work to clean the bottom of ponds and lakes, so you will be pretty well off.

Chemicals – There are chemicals available for you to use in order to get rid of the annoying aquatic life. Some such of these chemicals are Fluridone,2,4-D, Glyphosate, Diquat, Endothall. Naturally though, it is not suggested for you to use any sort of chemical to kill off your plant life, which is not dissimilar to the reason it is not recommended for you to throw an electrical current into the pond to capture your prize fish. Utilizing chemicals may be deadly for fish, as well as any other life forms which you might have within your pond. Use these carefully, or even better, don’t use them at all unless you absolutely have to.

Dye – You could purchase a wide range of chemical dye which would color the water, and therefore reduce the amount of sunlight for any water plants. It’s best to do this in the early spring for a better turnout.

Lining – Lining the bottom of the body of water with a type of plastic is also an choice, as that will stunt the development of any sort of water plant life. Keep in mind that it can become costly, so take into account the volume of the pond, in addition to the amount of plastic you will require. Naturally that is a good option for small fish ponds, though maybe not quite so much for a whole lake in your yard.

Keep in mind that there are tons of ways to halt aquatic life from infiltrating your pond, and to find the technique that is good for you, consult an expert or get together with a number of other pond owners.
