If you need virus protection only for your home computer, you can find some pretty good products for free. Adobe Acrobat is probably the best-known software package and they offer a few choices of products in that family from which you can choose. If your needs are very basic, you might be able to get away with the free Adobe Reader, which is easily downloaded.
Whatever way you go on purchasing using free software, the ability to work with pdf files will be an unavoidable skill. Unless some new file type takes its place, the need for pdf file format is not going away any time soon.
